![]() ![]() Truly reminds you of what a spec of sand we and the earth are in the time and space of the universe. There are many ways to outsmart the heat and humidity in Central Texas, but none as exciting and relaxing as Austin swimming holes and pools. All iconic Texas locations each with their own draw.Īnd even when it's hotter than heck in Big Bend, you can come up to the observatory, cool off, learn something and be amazed by what you can see in the night sky that you just can't see in the cities because of all the artificial light. Whether or into astronomy or not, it's a fascinating place and other places in the area are interesting as well. Davis which the closest place we could find. We didn't know that was even an option but, again, I'm sure they had made reservations long ago. ![]() We also met someone at the private viewing that was staying at the astronomers' quarters on site. It gets really cold (think 40's and 50's with wind) and the 36" scope we were using wasn't climate controlled so it was pretty nippy. And, in spite of the fact you were wearing shorts and t-shirts while traipsing around the valley, make sure you wear something more substantial and bring layers especially if you're doing one of the private viewings at night. These require advance (some months in advance) reservations so plan ahead if at all possible. And the private viewing gets you access to actually look through one of the scopes with a small group (ours was 10). The tour gets you insight on the various telescopes including history, what they're used for and how they work. While you can just go it on your own, I highly recommend signing up for a guided tour as well as a private viewing from one of their telescopes. It's in the middle of nowhere precisely because there isn't much light pollution in the middle of nowhere and that's part of what makes the McDonald so unique. We're not astronomy nerds or anything like that but this is an amazing facility that many people aren't aware of. The primary purpose of or trek to Big Bend was to go to the McDonald. (we have also slept in the back of our pickups with a blowup mattress If the weather is warm-spring or summer- we have gone w/o a tent and just slept in light bags, sometimes mosquitoes are bad-so plan accordingly. Just realize there are only primitive campsites (tents only). If you are really wanting to see the sunrise-camping in the park is your best bet. If you hike up later to see the sunset or the stars take a blanket to sit or lay on or cuddle under. ![]() Sunset is just as beautiful from on top-it may be warm during the day, but if you are on top as sunsets you will need a jacket or something. Since the time is going to be changing pretty soon you might be able to be on top when the sun comes up-check the local calendar for sunrise/sunset times. I have been asked about getting into the park to watch the sunrise from on top. They closed the park 2 cars be hind us, Whew!! Just realize that with the mild winter weather we have had here in Texas, people are wanting to get out and enjoy the sun. We arrived at 9am and sat in line for 25-30 minutes. If you are planning to head to Enchanted Rock for a day of hiking, especially on a weekend or during spring break, make sure to get there early!!! We went this past weekend to do some technical rock climbing and barely made it in. ![]()
